LESSON 1: ENGAGE YOUR CORE
All the time. In every exercise, no matter what the primary muscle focus is, your core should be engaged. Not only will this whittle your middle, but it will provide stability and support so that you can engage the other muscles more effectively throughout the entire 40 minute workout.
Here's how:
- Draw your belly button in towards your spine. Imagine someone's hands around your waist, pulling all the muscles closer towards each other and wrapping them around your spine.
- Keep the rib cage down and connected. Imagine there's a cord extending down from your lower ribs and hooked into your hip bones - that imaginary cord should be held tight and engaged.
- Breathe. A deep, powerful exhale during the force of the movement will not only engage the core - it will give you more power in the move.
